Alcide Davide Campestrini (Trento 1863 - Milan 1940)
Painter, designer and graphic artist, Alcide Davide Campestrini was born in Trento on 11 September 1863; he died in Milan on 9 January 1940. Father of Gianfranco and Ernesto, Alcide trained at the School of Drawing in Trento, then at the Brera Academy, a student of Giuseppe Bertini, Raffaele Casnedi, Bartolomeo Giuliano and the sculptors Francesco Barzaghi and Ambrogio Borghi. At the intercession of Bertini, from 1887 to 1920 he held a chair at the School of Applied Art to Industry of the Royal Sforza Castle and in 1894 at the Brera Academy itself. In the same year 1894 he obtained the Gavazzi Prize with the painting I neghittosi (Dante, fourth canto of Purgatory) , and became an honorary member of the Brera Academy, later of the Accademia degli Agiati of Rovereto. In 1934 he spent several months in Libya, of which some drawings and oil studies are preserved. A rather rare artist on the market, Campestrini is known for religious subjects, landscapes, portraits and genre scenes from the late nineteenth century, some military scenes of patriotic intent from the early twentieth century and decorations of villas and palaces (especially in Trentino) , on which the artist worked in the post-war period.
