Catalogue Note:
From one of McQueen’s earliest collections, ‘Joan’ was named in reference to the Catholic Martyr, Joan of Arc, and it was dedicated to his best friend and muse, Annabelle Neilson. The themes of martyrdom and persecution prevailed, and the impactful runway show closed with a model encircled in a satanic ring of flames. This coat is a rare and exemplary example of McQueen’s work and demonstrates his expert tailoring skills gained during his infant years as a pattern-cutter on London’s Saville Row.
