French Canadian Farm is a bright and serene sketch by A.Y. Jackson capturing one of his most cherished subjects, the pastoral countryside of rural Quebec. Beginning in the early 1920s, Jackson and his associates traveled up the St. Lawrence River seeking out modestly populated farm vistas for his devoted painting practice. The rolling snow-covered hills that dominate this sketch emanate a warm glow as they reflect the winter sun, while the shaded patches have been rendered in a periwinkle blue typical of Jackson’s winter palette. Four wooden pitch-roofed buildings are tightly clustered together at the centre of the composition, partially buried in snow as they protect feed, equipment and livestock from the frost.

Jackson tended to paint buildings in his rural scenes as if they were a part of the natural landscape. This is evidenced here by the expressive curved lines that make up the small barns and sheds, mimicking the rhythmic strokes used to render the high horizon, pastel sky and wind-tossed banks of snow. The tiny horse-drawn cart and its human driver are dwarfed by the other elements in the sketch, emphasizing the magical grandeur of Quebec’s rustic landscapes that Jackson was repeatedly compelled to replicate in paint.
