Barns at Ripon, Que is a quintessential example of A.Y. Jackson’s mature Quebec landscapes, radiating warmth and rustic charm. The Outaouais region, where Ripon is located, with its mix of rugged natural terrain and rural communities, perfectly suited Jackson’s romantic vision of Quebec. In this sketch, simple barns, crooked fences and a bumpy roadway are set within a rolling, partially snow-covered landscape. The sky is overcast and the tones muted, yet the scene exudes warmth as the white-pink snow emits a soft glow. Executed with a minimal palette and gestural surety, Barns at Ripon, Que conveys Jackson’s artistic confidence and intimate understanding of his subject. The work’s spontaneous character, sparsely painted in areas with the raw board visible throughout, suggests the scene was painted on location outdoors.

Only a few years after painting this work, Jackson relocated to the Ottawa region, settling in the village of Manotick, Ontario, where his niece Naomi Jackson Groves lived. From this base he maintained an active schedule of painting excursions, continuing to travel and paint throughout the Ottawa Valley, the Gatineau Hills and western Quebec. Listen Stop
