Alfred Lanternier, Limoges - Bedside table lamp - Porcelain - Sorrowful Pierrot
Rare Art Deco porcelain night lamp in the shape of a mourning Pierrot.
Executed by Alfred Lanternier, Limoges. France, circa 1925.
François Frédéric Lanternier established a luxury porcelain workshop in 1857. Together with Breuil, he took over the Chabrol factory and started producing porcelain, which was artistically hand-decorated in his studio. In 1890, Frederic's son Alfred Lanternier joined the company. Alfred gained experience in England as a representative of Wedgewood. The company changed its name to A. Lanternier & Co. They acquired another porcelain factory in Limoges. During World War I, the factory also produced porcelain dolls. After the war, A. Lanternier & Co. continued the production of luxury porcelain. In 1925, they received the Grand Prix at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. They also produced porcelain for two design studios: Pomone (Le Bon Marché department store) and La Mestrado, the design studio of the famous Galeries Lafayette in Paris.
Beautifully robust modeled and decorated with white porcelain in black and partially gilded. Pierrot's head is slightly bowed, and his sad grimace is very refined, painted with a few delicate lines. Excellent quality.
Good condition. The lamp works well. Beautiful new wiring. The gilding on the foot is somewhat worn at a corner, see photos.
