"Russia [A Popular History of Russia: From the Earliest Times]" by Alfred Rambaud, with a supplementary chapter of recent events (1877-1898) by Edgar Saltus, Nations of the World Series published by Peter Fenelon Collier, New York, 1898. Complete in two volumes.

Hard boards, original red cloth [a little surface wear, one small spot cloth damage: see photo], gold lettering on spines, 6" x 8.1/2"; stamps of J. Griff Edwards on the front endpaper and first text page in both volumes; 309 + 310 pages including Index at the end of the second volume + a few illustrations on glossy paper, a little foxing the plates and pages next to the plates, very good condition.

Alfred Nicolas Rambaud (1842-1905) was a French historian. His work on the History of the Byzantine Empire is still accepted as a classic authority. In the 1860s-70s, Rambaud watched attentively the role played by Russia in European politics, and soon observed how much to the interest of France, a good entente with this power would be. He accordingly threw himself into the study of Russian History, staying in Russia in order to learn its language, institutions and customs. In 1874 he took part in the 3rd Archeological Congress that was held in Kiev, and wrote a report on it for the "Revue des Deux Mondes". On his return, he published several books on Russian History.

John Griff Edwards (1870-1912) belonged to the old established settler family in Virginia. His father and uncles served in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. The grandfather, LeRoy Griffin Edwards (1804-1866), was the president of the Confederate Convention of 1864. John's wife, Mrs. J. Griff Edwards founded and led the first of the United Confederate Choirs of America (1907). After that she was elected the 'Commander in Chief of the United Confederate Choirs.' In 1911 she published a volume titled "Echoes From Dixie A Collection of Songs Used in the South."
