"Larks in the Popcorn" by H. Allen Smith, illustrated by Leo Herschfield, published by Doubleday & Company, Garden City, New York, First Edition with '1948' on bottom of the title page and copyright. Price un-clipped dust jacket.

Original dust jacket [creases and damages: see photos]; hard boards, original publisher's cloth with green decorations on front board and spine, black lettering on spine; 5" x 8"; illustrated endpapers; 256 pages, several line illustrations, very good condition.

Allen Smith, passport to sales with his ingratiating, inconsequential, tangential type of monologue, tells here of the dislocation of a couple of mildewed New Yorkers as they move to the outskirts of Westchester County (Chappaqua area) and become truly rural with an agricultural program of watermelons, strawberries and popcorn. Along with some crabbing about crab grass, and his twin oppressions, poison ivy and wasps, commutation, - there's some pretty diverting dialogue about the selection and naming of their house, the awakening of his mechanical instincts along with the nature-urge, the Reader's Digest, next door neighbor, the anti-sociability of after-35 and the distractions of country living, household hint addiction, and so on. Funny, humorous story.
