Alphonse de Lamartine - Portraits-Vignettes pour l'histoire des Girondins[avec deux lettres autographes] - 1843/1847
Quarto period full brown morocco (binding by Pagnant) , slightly blunt corners, slightly rubbed joints, Paris, Furne, 1847, 32 pp. + 2 handwritten letters and 1 envelope, 1843-1847. The book is accompanied by two long letters by Lamartine. The first in 2 pp. is not dated and deals with the French Revolution, its events and actors and specifically concerns the history of the Girondins as well as the role of the people in a democratic government; and a second letter, dated 20 August 1843 in 3 pp technically dealing with the work and planning for a publication until 1848. These documents anticipate Lamartine’s destiny while he did not know that he himself would be the main actor of a revolution after having described the mechanisms of another, as well as a supporter of democracy. These letters accompany a copy of the portrait atlas of the Histoire des Girondins (no foxing) elegantly bound by Pagnant. The copy belonged to Armand Despres whose posterity is made up more of bibliophilia than medical activity.
