Ambrosius de Spiera's Quadragesimale de floribus sapientiae
Vindelinus de Spira, 1476
SPIERA, Ambrosius de (1413-1455). Quadragesimale de floribus sapientiae. Venice: Vindelinus de Spira, 18 December 1476.

First edition of Ambrosius de Spiera’s Lenten sermons. Originally delivered to his brothers at the Servite monastery of Saint Marcello in Rome, these sermons were famed not only for their learning but also their concision and clarity—so much so that the Carmelites would later try to “claim” Spiera as one of their own. Although not meant for a popular audience, they went through seven editions by 1516, testifying to Ambrosius’s skill as a preacher. HC 919*; BMC V 248; BSB-Ink S-522; IGI 9129; Goff S-678; ISTC is00678000.

Chancery folio (303 x 203mm). 512 leaves. One red initial (some leaves toning, spotting at ends, first and last blanks remargined at gutter). Contemporary blindstamped calf, brass catchplates and straps, a few leather index tabs, title in ink on fore-edge (rebacked, corner showing). Provenance: Johannes, priest of Saint Michael (gift inscription dated 1494 to:) – Poor Clares of Runcada, Brixen, Tyrol, at the Monastery of Saint Elizabeth (their shelfmark) – acquired from H.P. Kraus, New York, 11 April 1955.
