[Americana] [Washington, George] Residence of Washington. Mount Vernon.
No place, ca. 1840s. Watercolor and ink on thick wove paper, heightened in silver; ink manuscript title at bottom. Mounted on contemporary sheet; short closed tear in left margin. 15 x 19 1/2 in. (381 x 495 mm). In gilt frame, 18 1/2 x 23 in. (470 x 584 mm).
A lovely and early watercolor view of the east facade of President George Washington's Mount Vernon home.
The work is likely from the 1840s, when Mount Vernon was the home of John Augustine Washington III (1821-1861), George Washington's great-grand nephew, and the last private owner of the estate. It is a charming nineteenth-century view of the Palladian-style residence of America's first President.
