Catalogue Note:
The crest, motto, and coat-of-arms found on this tankard are those of Buchanan, almost certainly for William Buchanan (1748 - 1824) of Baltimore, Maryland, in whose family it descended. The son of Dr. George Buchanan, William married firstly in 1772 Margaret Hill Dorsey, and then secondly Hepzibah Brown. For a bookplate for William Buchanan with these same arms, see C. K. Bolton, Bolton's American Armory, Baltimore, 1927, p. 25.
The large scale and accomplished handling of the engraved arms and cartouche speak to the hand of a master. James Smither was probably the most talented engraver in Philadelphia in the early 1770s, see note to the following lot.
