LOT 0089

An Italian Baroque sculpture of the Three Graces

[ translate ]

Solid Carrara marble, fully sculptured, openworked in places. Three young women embracing and caressing each other, dressed in classical, antique-style robes. Mounted on a heavy slab of dark grey stone. Substantial damage due to age. Knocked in places, partially restored. Small elements have been lost. Dimensions 49 x 42 x 20 cm.
In Greek mythology, the three Graces or Charites were considered only as minor goddesses or handmaidens of the gods, but were closely connected to them. As Euphrosyne, Thalia and Aglaea, they brought charm, beauty and joy to both the gods and mankind. A popular motif in the fine arts, they have been depicted by numerous artists and still are to this day. The best known works include "Primavera" by Sandro Botticelli (seen here as a detail), "The Three Graces" by Raphael or that by Lucas Cranach the Elder. A larger-than-life sculpture in marble, made by one of the most important neoclassical sculptors, Antonio Canova, is on show in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
