An icon of the child Krishna, Tanjore, South India, late 19th-early 20th century, opaque pigments, gold leaf and sukka (limestone paste) on cloth stretched over wood, the light-skinned god seated on a low backless throne-chair, holding a flower bud in one hand, a parrot perched on his other hand, a pale yellow female deity before him, surrounded with attendants, musicians at his feet, the surface with shimmering, gilded relief punctuated with sequins, the scene enshrined in a curtained alcove, in original thick wood frame, some damage to bottom left corner, 73.5 x 58.5cm. without frame
The painting has suffered some damp to the lower third of painted area resulting in a greyish surface, and loss of paint and applied gilding; a number of pearls and applied areas are loose and are contained in a plastic bag; the work has not been examined out of the frame
