An important Hamburg parcel gilt silver tankard

Cylindrical corpus, the basal rim and domed lid with chased tulips and narcissi, the corpus decorated with amoretti and bacchantes. The scroll handle and thumbrest with auricular mouldings. Crowned by a detailed figure of a drinker. Engraved below the rim with a crest beneath a foliate crown, by repute from the arms of the Counts von Bernstorff. The wineskin and the grapes in the hands of the finial figure lost. H 27.5 cm, weight 1,607 g.

Marks of Peter Ohr I, 1654 - 62. Literature

Cf. a tankard by Ohr in private ownership, illus. in: Schliemann 1985, no. 262. A Hamburg silver tankard from the same period with an identical finial illus. in: Hernmarck; The European Silversmith, London 1979, p. 122.

The goldsmith Ohr was among the most sought-after masters of the period in Hamburg. He received commissions from the Regent for gifts to the Swedish court, among many others, for example for a silver sculpture of a putto with a cornucopia and a large table fountain for tsar Alexei Michailowitsch; now both at Kreml Museum, Moscow, cf. cat. Silvergåvor från Sveriges Regenter till Rysslands Tsarer, Stockholm 2014, No. 46, 55.
