An important mother-of-pearl-inlaid matchlock-musket, Dresden, circa 1580/90

Description: Octagonal to round smoothbore barrel in cal. 18 mm. To the left of the breech two indistinct marks. Rectangular pan with pivot cover. Rectangular lock with dragon-shaped cock. Walnut fullstock richly decorated with engraved and blackened inlays of bone and mother-of-pearl, with intermittent silver wire-inlays. Iron butt cap and trigger guard. Wooden ramrod with horn tip. Length 139.5 cm. Muskets decorated in a closely related manner can be found in the Dresden armoury and many international museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York (Inv. 28.100.06) and the Saint Louis Art Museum (Inv. 302:1951). Most likely this group of muskets was made by Dresden gun smiths for the Saxonian court.
