The four inner cartouches showing the hunting scenes are after a silver plate in the Hermitage depicting the Sasanian king Shapur II pursuing lions, measuring 22.9 cm in diameter. The piece was found in 1927 along with several other Byzantine, Sasanian and Central Asian dishes.
