Ancient Canosan Greek Ceramic Winged Nike

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $475**

Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosan Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A beautiful mold-made figure of Nike, Goddess of Victory, wrapped in a dramatic robe, with wings projecting backward from the figure. She stands with one hand on her chest, her head covered, leaning back dramatically. Pale pink color is at the neck and interior of the robe. Nike was a popular figure in Canosan art. Comes with custom stand. Size: 2.5" W x 4.25" H (6.4 cm x 10.8 cm); height on stand: 5.25" (13.3 cm)

Canosa, or Canosion as it was known then, was a major center of the ceramics and pottery trade when it was a Greek polis. It produced truly unique pottery, completely different in decoration style (although not in shape) from earlier and neighboring traditions. The clay is buff, with the decoration applied directly to it without the use of slip. The entire body was covered with white slip, with a second ground of pink color applied selectively to the background.

Provenance: private Florida, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
