Ancient Pacific Northwest Stone Mortar w/ Face

Native American/First Nations, Pacific Northwest Coast, pre-contact/early contact era, ca. 1000 to 1800 CE. Carved from a pale grey volcanic stone with a fine-grained texture, this is a shallow mortar or pot for mixing pigments or grinding small quantities of organic matter like medicines. Flip it over and on its underside is a haunting anthropomorphic face with shallow incisions for eyes and another below the line of the nose. Signs of wear on the interior demonstrate its use. Size: 3" W x 1.65" H (7.6 cm x 4.2 cm)
