Oil lamp Roman Empire 2nd Century BC MATERIAL: Bronze DIMENSIONS: Length 10 cm PROVENANCE: Private collection, Germany. Acquired in the auction Herman Historica the 05/05/2014. CONDITION: Good condition, Intact. DESCRIPTION: Roman oil lamp in organic format, featuring an oval shell decorated with vegetable moldings, simulating the appearance of a medulla oblongata, leaving the filling and wick openings free. It has a long handle that facilitates its movement and that differs from the typology of handles –smaller in size and with a central hole– that Roman oil lamp are used to have. The word of oil lamps comes from the Greek "lukno". Its basic function was to give light, but it was also used as a votive and funerary element. The first oil lamp were made by hand, then with a lathe, and from the 3rd century BC. to mold. The mold consisted of two dies, one for the top and one for the bottom. The mold making technique consisted of pressing the clay into the dies and then joining the two parts. Finally, the handle was added. Notes: The piece includes authenticity certificate. The piece includes Spanish Export License (Passport for European Union) - If the piece is destined outside the European Union a substitution of the export permit should be requested. This process could take between 1 and 2 months. The seller guarantees that he acquired this piece according to all national and international laws related to the ownership of cultural property.
