One side depicting the youthful Dionysus wearing a vine wreath in his hair with long flowing tresses falling at his shoulders, the other side representing a mature Dionysus, also wearing a wreath, with a curling moustache and long archaising beard. This type of sculpture has its precedent in the representations of the god Janus, the god of the gates, of the beginning and the end, who is always represented with two faces, often with different ages. For this reason, sculptures of two-faced gods are often called Janus-shaped. Specifically, this sculpture represents the god Bacchus in Roman mythology, Dionysus in Greek mythology, god of wine and festivities, as well as the patron of agriculture, theatre and carnal debauchery. Provenance: Belgian private collection of Mr. Y. D. , Brussels acquired in the 1980s. / Acquired at Bonhams, London, Auction, 2014 Exhibited: Ifergan Collection, Málaga (2018-2020) Statement seen by Catawiki.
