Catalogue Note:
The collage depicts the eye of artist and photographer Lee Miller, also a model and a muse of the Surrealist Man Ray. Lee’s eye can be viewed as a symbol of beauty, curiosity, and a need to observe. Over the years, Anna Ostoya has used the motif of Lee’s eye in a series of works on canvas collaging it with gold leaf and with found images mostly from the newspapers, as in “Lee 1,” which was shown at MoMa in 2013. “Lee 7” (2017) is unique in the series as Ostoya used for it a photograph of trees she took when wandering the Adirondacks in the fall, and offers a pause from the overflow of media images and news.

Anna Ostoya makes use of various media in her work: paintings, collages, objects, sculptures, texts and sounds, which make up topical series of works, intermedial installations and complex exhibitions. Her works are usually elaborate, intertextual projects, in which she creates alternative approaches to knowledge.

Anna Ostoya (b. 1978 in Kraków, Poland) lives and works in New York. Her work has been shown at Kunsthaus Baselland, Muttenz, Switzerland; Tate St. Ives, United Kingdom; the 2015 Lyon Biennial, France; the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; the Power Plant Toronto, Canada; the CCS Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; Manifesta 7 Rovereto, Italy; Lisson Gallery, London, United Kingdom; and the Second Athens Biennial, Greece. She has had solo exhibitions at Zacheta National Gallery, Warsaw, Poland; La Kunsthalle Mulhouse, France; CCA Kronika, Bytom, Poland; and with her galleries: Bortolami, New York; tegenboschvanvreden, Amsterdam; and Silberkuppe, Berlin. She studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt/M and the Parsons School in Paris and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York.
