Annibale Carracci (1560-1609)

“Saint John the Baptist”

146 x 119 cm in contemporary frame

Oil on canvas - datable between the end of the sixteenth century and the beginning of the seventeenth century (1580-1620)

Annibale Carracci is one of the most important painters of the sixteenth century. His works ranged from genre painting to landscapes, from portraits to religious scenes, from drawings to self-portraits, and together with Caravaggio and Rubens he laid the foundations for the birth of the Baroque in Italy.

The painting, of excellent quality, depicts the figure of John the Baptist, the prophet who announced the arrival of the Messiah and baptized him in the Jordan River. He looks directly at the viewer, with a confident and aware expression. The physiognomy and attitude are typical of the mature production of Annibale Carracci, and have given rise to various allegorical interpretations, both in Christian and pagan terms, however rather forced given the unequivocal nature of the subject.
