[ translate ]

Anonymous (16th century) after Albrecht Dürer (1471 Nürnberg - 1528 ibid.), Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg (The Great Cardinal), c. 1580, Copper engraving

Technique: Copper engraving on Paper, mounted on Cardboard

Inscription: Middle left monogrammed: "AD". Upper middle inscribed in the printing plate: "MDXXIII | SIC.OCVLOS.SIC.ILLE.GENAS.SIC.ORA.FEREBAT. | ANNO.ETATIS. SVE. XXXIIII". At the lower part further inscription: "ALBERTVS. MI.DI.SA.SANC.ROMANAE.ECCLAE.TI.SAN. | CHRYSOGONI.PBR.CARDINA.MAGVN.AC.MAGDE. | ARCHIEPS.ELECTOR.IMPE.PRIMAS.ADMINI. | HALBER.MARCHI.BRANDENBVRGENSIS.".

Date: c. 1580

Description: Equilateral copy with Dürer's monogram. Excellent copy after Albrecht Dürer's portrait of Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg (1490-1545). The anonymous engraver proves the masterly knowledge of his craft as well as of Dürer's artistic hand. Even a close look at the lines and shapes reveals hardly any difference from the original. Even the lines of the background or the shading, which at first glance seem unimportant, correspond amazingly exactly to Dürer's work. Stitch direction, curves and open spaces are hardly distinguishable. Only isolated "outliers" expose this copy of a true master. The script in particular, however, differs from the original, which in Dürer's work is clearly more delicate and often formed with double lines.

Person: Albrecht von Brandenburg (1490 Cölln - 1545 Martinsburg/Mainz)

Literature: Strauss, Walter L.: The illustrated Bartsch. Albrecht Dürer; New York 1981. Cat. Rais. No.: 103?. | Heller, Joseph: Das Leben und die Werke Albrecht Dürer's; Bamberg 1827. Cat. Rais. No.: unbekannt.
