Anonymous (18th century) after Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725 Tournus - 1805 Paris), Head Study of a Lady with a Bonnet, c. 1750, Charcoal

Description: The depiction is based on Jean-Baptiste Greuze's Head Portrait of a Sleeping Woman. As in the present portrait, Greuze showed his wife in the moment of sleep with her mouth slightly open, her eyes closed and her curls falling out of her bonnet. In our portrait, as in Greuze's, the facial features are softly and finely drawn, while the dress and the background are laid out in bold, free-flowing strokes.
