Antique Carved Wooden Folk Saint Santo Sculpture

38" x 12.5" x 9". Saint/santo bulto hand carved and painted wooden folk statue, depicting Mary or possibly another female Catholic saint. Likely of European make from the 18th or 19th century. The figure is somewhat flattened on the back for positioning against a wall, and a hook and notch on the front of the base implies that another figure or component of the sculpture once rested in front of the female figure. Statue was likely used in a church for a period of time. Wear includes some paint chipping and discoloration as well as some minor scuffs and chips, though paint is generally in good condition given age.
