Antique Indian Leaded Brass Mukhalinga

South Asia, India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A leaded brass Mukhalinga (literally "linga with a face") with a cobra atop the visage, created via the lost wax (cire perdue) process. A linga is a representation of the Hindu god Shiva, with one or more human faces. In this example, Shiva's face is presented with large almond-shaped eyes, an arched browline, a triangular nose, ornamented ears, a full mustache and beard framing slightly parted lips, an attractive headdress with incised decorative motifs, and a cobra atop. The piece also has integral loops at either side for attachment or suspension. Size: 3.375" W x 4.8" H (8.6 cm x 12.2 cm)
