Antique Italian Hobnail Safe

Antique Italian Hobnail Safe
19th Cent, Italy
Antique Italian hobnail safe of wrought iron over a wood carcass, richly decorated with gilt-brass appliqués, engraved geometric ornament, and characteristic domed hobnail studs. The elaborately decorated façade features a concealed keyhole, ornate escutcheons, and a central classical mask beneath a stylized palmette, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship associated with Northern Italian safes of the late 18th to early 19th century. Heavy iron strapwork and reinforced construction were designed to provide protection against theft and fire, while the sophisticated locking mechanism exemplifies the ingenuity of period blacksmiths.
