Origin : Caucasus Size: 157 X 112 cm (Approximately 61.8 X 44.1 inch) Knots: 5 x 5 = 25 knots per sq cm Condition: Excellent. Ready to use, collectable. Age: 2rd quarter 20th century Description of Design and History: This represent a well known type of shirwan, prayer rug is attributed to Marasali, a village some fifty kilometers south of shemakha.Shirvan produced many highly decorative antique rugs that have a formality and stylistic complexity that is found in few rugs from the Caucasus. A wide variety of dates is found on published examples, ranging from the last decade of the 18th century to the second decade of the 20th cenury.The depth of colors, the complexity of the composition and the phenomenal patterns featured in antique Shirvan rugs set them apart from those produced in other regions of the Caucasus.All natural dyes are paramount for the carpet to have more than just decorative value. Beyond that, various dyers had varying levels of skill and invested different lengths of time in dyeing the yarns. The Å“quality of color€Âœits radiance and level of nuance within each color€Âœis centrally important. Certain rare colors such as Tyrian purple, saffron yellow, cochineal rose and greens add to the carpet„¢s value
