Antique Solid Wood Bible Box Writing Slope 1860s

[ translate ]

Antique solid wooden Bible Box with the slanted top, a lower raised edge to support books and/or papers for reading. The top opens to reveal ample interior storage for the large family Bible or other books and office materials. Second half of the 19th century: 1860s-1880s.

The box is 15.3/4" [40cm] wide; 14.1/2" [35.8cm] long; 5.1/2" to 4.1/2" [14cm - 11.5cm] deep; the boards are 1/2" [1.3cm] thick, the bottom is 1/4" thick. Wood aging, the wooden bottom board shows a large crease in the middle which is consistent with antique shrinking wood, hand-made antique nails. The box is covered by the several antique layers of varnish, worn finish, battered and chipped edges, old handmade construction. The lock was changed some time in the 19th century, [see photo]; the key is missing; old green velvet inside the box. Very good condition.

Such antique Bible boxes were mostly used for storage and display of Bible from the medieval age to the late 19th century. The slanted top could have been used for reading an opened Bible and holding it while recording the family history of life/death/birth/marriages.
