Antique Tin Type Photo, African American, Civil War

Tin type photo of William McCoy [April 1842-?], showing him as a young man in his early 20th [Civil War era]. The photo was taken in Petersburg, Virginia. His son, Ulysses Simpson Mccoy [1877-1948] became the first African American physician in Central Virginia. His praxis was located in Petersburg, VA.

The tin measures c.2.1/2" x 3.1/4"; some rust, a few small damages, fair / good condition.

McCoy is an old African American settler family in Virginia. In the 18th, 19th century documents they are mentioned 'free-mulatto', 'colored', and small farmers. James McCoy was soldier in the Revolutionary War, and applied later for the veteran's pension. [His application is preserved in the Virginia archives].
