Antique chest of drawers with superstructure and mirror, China, early 20th century, chicken wing wood, finely crafted chest of drawers with curved convertible legs, front with 3 drawers, at the back two small pedestals also with curved small supports. The back wall with turned ones Columns in a rectangular frame, above in the middle a blue medallion with floral motifs, framed by a carving with bamboo motifs. On the left a vertical rectangular mirror mounted. Sheet with signs of use, height 169 x 79 x 46 cm
Jichimu (鸡翅 木) literally translated as “chicken wing wood” describes a wood whose deep brown and gray patterns resemble the patterns of bird feathers when cut tangentially. The radial cut appears less dramatic with parallel lines of concentrically layered tissue. It is botanically classified in the genus Ormosia, of which up to 26 species can grow in China. Jichimu is native to Hainan Island, and the relatively large amount of Jichimu furniture found in Fujian Province also corresponds to a source that reportedly includes seven different species today and whose materials are practically undifferentiated, but with different leaf patterns exhibit. Hongdou (red bean) and Xiangsi can also be other names for related species.
Provenance: Purchased in 2006 from the art trade in China. Place of manufacture Fujian. With export certificate from Radiance.
