Antonio Campi
Cremona, 1524 – 1587
\r
Antonio Campi was born in Cremona in 1524. He was an Italian painter, historian, and architect, the son of Galeazzo Campi and brother of Vincenzo and Giulio Campi. As a student of his older brother Giulio, he painted his first altarpiece in 1546 for the church of Sant'Ilario in Cremona. Subsequently, together with his brother, he also executed paintings for the loggia in Brescia in 1549.
\r
In his style, the influences and artistic reflections of artists such as Giulio Romano, Parmigianino, and Primaticcio were immediately noticeable. In 1550, he, together with his brother Giulio, participated in the decoration of the Pallavicino Palace in Torre Pallavicina, creating refined and colorful mythological paintings.
\r
He moved to Milan, where he painted an altarpiece depicting the Resurrection of Christ for Santa Maria presso San Celso and decorated the Church of San Paolo Converso with the cycle of frescoes in the presbytery. His painting began to become known and spectacular enough to earn the favor of Archbishop Carlo Borromeo.
\r
In 1566, upon returning to Cremona, he painted the Pietà for the Cathedral and the Beheading of John the Baptist in San Sigismondo. During these years, numerous frescoes and paintings were created, including the Adoration of the Shepherds for Santa Maria della Croce in Crema.
\r
Among the Milanese works of 1557, the triptych in the museum attached to the church of S. Marco should be noted, while between 1583 and 1584 there are the two paintings of the Gallarati chapel at Sant'Angelo and, in collaboration with his brother Vincenzo, the decoration of the barrel vault of the church of San Paolo, an anticipation of Baroque painting.
\r
In the final phase of his life, he collaborated with his brother Vincenzo on the decoration of the vaults of S. Paolo, and the last known work of Campi, signed and dated 1586, is the Circumcision found in S. Francesco da Paola in Naples. He died in 1587 and was buried in SS. Nazaro e Celso.
\r
The work depicts the Prayer in the Garden, the episode in the Gospel stories that begins the Passion of Christ. At the center of the scene, Jesus kneels on a rocky outcrop, absorbed in prayer and looking towards the angel who appears before him to deliver the cup, a symbol and prefiguration of his death on the cross. Below, the apostles John, Peter, and James the Greater, called to keep watch in the Garden of Gethsemane together with the master, are fallen asleep. The atmosphere of silence and meditation dominating the scene is about to be interrupted by the arrival of the soldiers in the background, tasked with arresting Jesus.
