First dated edition of Aquinas’s popular teaching text. Twelve Questions on Various Subjects was composed over several decades, while Aquinas was teaching at the University of Paris. It addresses thorny points of theology brought to him by his students. This edition is an early production from the press of Arnold ther Hoernen, the second printer at Cologne, and one of relatively few bearing an imprint and his printer’s device. Chancery folio (286 x 208mm). 156 leaves. Incipit, colophon, and printer’s device printed in red. Initials, paragraph marks, and capital strokes in red (gutter dampstain at beginning, some light dustsoiling; a few small paper flaws with loss of a few letters). 19th-century calf, red edges (joints starting but sturdy, some scrapes on boards). Provenance: acquired from William H. Schab, New York, 28 March 1955.
