First edition of the third part of Aquinas’s great unfinished work, in a contemporary binding. Each part of the Summa has its own separate printing history and bibliography; this third part addresses Christology. Royal folio (389 x 282mm). 270 leaves. Several elaborate initials with infill designs, smaller capitals, red paragraph and capital strokes (dampstaining and browning, a few leaves spotted, some soiling, with about 10 leaves repaired in text with some losses of letters). Contemporary calf tooled in blind with fillets over wooden boards, fragments of a 12th-century lectionary for the mass used as pastedowns (worming, old sewn repair to leather on upper board, joints cracked and both boards quite loose, lacking straps and one catchplate). Provenance: marginalia – Rouffach, Alsace, Franciscans of the Strict Observance (inscription) – acquired from Georges Heilbrun, Paris, 22 July 1964.
