This 290 page volume was written by Frank Hurley, who accompanied Douglas Mawson and Sir Ernest Shackleton on their Antarctic voyages from 1911-16 as their chief photographer. The narrative is not scientific in nature, but "tried to tell of the wonders we saw; of the dangers we faced; of the glamour of being the first to penetrate the unknown." The volume is filled with 73 full page illustrations of scenes along the journey as well as 2 folding maps - one showing the tracks of the two voyages (7.7 x 8.1") and another showing the path of Shackleton's ill-fated Endurance (11.7 x 12"). Octavo, hardbound in green cloth with gilt titles on front cover and spine.

Maps and plates are mostly clean, bright, and near fine. Text is very good with occasional light toning and offsetting from opposing plates. Binding is cracked but still stable and the back hinge is starting. Covers have light wear and a few minor stains.
