Astrology.- Manilius (Marcus) Astronomicon, edited by Joseph Scaliger, 2 parts in 1, collation: α-δ4 A-R4 * **4 ⁂2 a-z Aa-Zz Aaa-Sss4, Latin and Greek text with occasional Hebrew and Arabic (in the new type Raphalengius had acquired for the project), woodcut printer's device to titles, astrological diagrams in text, privilege f. at end, occasional spotting, lightly browned, 17th century calf, sympathetically rebacked, lower corners little worn, covers rubbed and with a few scuffs, small 4to, (186 x 136mm.), Leiden, Christopher Raphaelengius for the house of Plantin, 1600.

⁂ A very good copy of Scaliger's massively revised second edition of Manilius, which 'marked a culmination, perhaps the highest point on the arc of his humanistic scholarship' (Grafton, Scaliger II, 1992, p.458). Here he rails against the whole school of modern astrology, basing his text on the recently discovered C11 Gembloux MS.

Provenance: 'G. Cragus, 1618' (ink inscription to first title); Skene Library (engraved bookplate to front pastedown); John M. Pryse Occult and Mystical Books New York City (book label to front pastedown).
