Fourth edition, in a contemporary binding. Augustinus of Ancona, an ardent curialist, wrote extensively on church politics and this, perhaps his most famous work, is "the most comprehensively detailed assertion of papal authority ever attempted" (McGrade). Chancery folio (301 x 210mm). 262 leaves. Elaborate penwork initials in red, blue, and chartreuse with flourishes and decoration, first initial with partial border (some dampstaining and worming in text, first blank remargined at gutter). Contemporary blindstamped calf over wooden boards (rebacked, wormed, lacking straps and catchplates, boards chipped and worn). Provenance: Luneville, Augustinian Canons Regular (inscription dated 1657) – M. René Amédée Choppin (bookplate) – acquired from Bernard Quaritch, Ltd, 29 January 1965.
