Lo scrittore ha appena letto, con le lacrime agli occhi, la lettera di Bonheur, suo grande amico. « Tout de même, en passant un jour à Paris, quel plaisir me feriez-vous en venant sonner à ma porte ! Si bousculé que je sois par la vie, je me sens parfois très seul, certaines affections du passé n’ont jamais été remplacées ». Il musicista Raymond Bonheur, nipote del pittore Rosa, riceveva spesso Gide a Magny-les-Hameaux (dove lì la scuola porta suo nome). Mise in musica "Les Elégies" di Gide. Gide scrisse un bellissimo tributo a Bonheur alla sua morte e la loro corrispondenza fu pubblicata.
