Azeri Verneh
Second half 19th century, 196 x 104 cm, South Caucasus, Azerbaijan
A small blue Azeri cover with a warp-faced plainweave foundation. Woven in the sumakh technique like the whole of the border, the field design of trees arranged in offset rows is a representation of a garden. The trees are interspersed with tiny S-forms and diamonds which were apotropaic symbols intended to ward off evil. Burns has illustrated a white-ground example. - Good condition, original finishes all around.
