Aztec Copper Axe Head - Tepoztli
Pre-Columbian, Mexico City region, Aztec (Mexica), ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A well-cast example of a "tepoztli", the metal component of a "tlaximaltepoztli" (in Nahuatl, tlaximal=carpentry and tepoztli=metal axe) - the classic copper alloy axe head that was mounted on a wooden haft by fitting the butt through an opening in the top of the haft. Examples are seen in pre-Conquest codices such as the Codex Laud. This axe head has a particularly elegant form, tapering from a thin, broad head to a narrow, wider butt. Larger axes were used in battle, while ones of this size were used as currency or ceremonially. Size: 1.6" W x 4.45" H (4.1 cm x 11.3 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.
