BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985) - Plutonium Cell and Canister - A plutonium cell and canister from Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future. Emmett "Doc" Brown (Christopher Lloyd) swindled plutonium cells from terrorists to use as the main power source in his initial demonstration of the DeLorean's time-traveling capabilities. During the demonstration, the cell dropped first a quarter, and then completely, into the vehicle when Brown rotated it. This cell and canister are made of clear acrylic, with a portion of the plutonium core made from a transparent red acrylic. The internal rod features a "Caution Radioactive Material" sticker and has two plastic washers to secure it in place inside the canister. Unlike the more-common static canisters, this canister has a special unattached bottom with two overlapping circles machined into it, one only partway through forming an indentation and one all the way through forming a hole. When the main body of the canister is rotated and the bottom held in place, the cell slides into the open hole, dropping out of the bottom of the canister just as the cell did into the DeLorean in the film. During filming, the canister was filled with water, which has since been drained. This lot exhibits scuffing and scratches on the acrylic, a crack along the seam of the canister, discoloration, and lifted adhesive. Dimensions: 3" x 3" x 7.25" (7.75 cm x 7.75 cm x 18.5 cm) Estimate: $40,000 - 80,000 Bidding for this lot will end on Tuesday, March 12th. The auction will begin at 9:00AM PDT and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on Wednesday, March 13th or Thursday, March 14th.
