Ex-collection the Copley Society of Boston, with the original label on the frame back; private collection, New York.

Van Ness (1888-1981) grew up in Hyde Park, Massachusetts. She studied with Frank W. Benson and Edmund Tarbell at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and took summer art classes with Charles H. Woodbury (see lot 205) in Ogunquit, Maine. She is considered among the foremost artists of the Boston School of post-Impressionist painting in the first half of the 1900s.
