The photograph was a part of the Last Sitting, a book of Monroe photographs by Bert Stein and Annie Gottlieb. The photoshoot was commissioned by Vogue magazine in late June 1962, taking place over three daily sessions, six weeks before Marylin Monroe's death. Bert Stern published The Last Sitting in 1982.
