Swamps, literal and metaphorical, have long been the stuff of American nightmares (including recent cries to drain the nation's political swamps). According to the website of a Louisiana community organization, "These forested wetlands could be home to anything, and you would never see it coming. Supernatural monsters, dangerous animals, dead bodies... Be careful, because the swamps are no man's land."
