British late 18th/early 19th Century tipstaff or tipstave of office. Heavy brass construction with wood handle. Engraved acorn finial end. The body engraved “St. Michaels Ward”. 8 3/4" long overall. 416 grams. Tipstaffs or tipstaves pre-dated the establishment of the British national police force and were given to certain public officials (such as bailiffs) as a symbol of their office - and also for use as a club when necessary.
