BUREAU PLAT "À ESPAGNOLETTES AVEC AIGRETTES"

[ translate ]

Louis XV style, Paris, 19th century. In the style of Charles Cressent (maître 1720).
Purpleheart and tulipwood, inlaid in reserves and fillets. Rectangular top, lined with brown, gold-impressed leather, edged in bronze, the corners decorated with shells. Three drawers. Curved legs and bronze espagnolettes. On bronze sabots designed as lion paws. Opulent bronze mounts, designed as scrolls, leaves, rocailles and heads of Bacchus.
176 × 98 × 79 cm.

Leather, foxed and with signs of wear. Minor restorations and losses. Bleached.

Five bureau plats "à espagnolettes avec aigrettes" with very similar bronze decorations and the striking espagnolettes, attributed to Cressent, are known, and are on display in international museums. One of them is in the Palace of Versailles, dated ca. 1725-30. However, the bureau plat in Versailles, as well as the other comparative pieces, show some differences in terms of shape and veneer work. (Alexandre Pradère, Charles Cressent, Dijon 2002, pp. 124 ff, Cat. Nos. 47 ff.).
