Biblical scene - Joseph in prison interprets the dreams of the cupbearer and the baker of the Pharaoh
\r
Oil on canvas - in original primed canvas

The painting depicts Joseph interpreting the dreams of the cupbearer and the baker of Pharaoh (Genesis 40-42) . The first dreamed of a vine in front of him, from which clusters of grapes grew; he squeezed them into a cup to give the juice to Pharaoh. The head of the bakers, on the other hand, dreamed of three baskets of bread and food on his head, but birds were eating the contents of one of the baskets. It is very rare to find such a precise and explicit iconography of this scene. Usually, the cupbearer and baker do not have particular attributes. The work, of notable artistic interest, is attributed to the Brindisi painter—who lived and died in Naples—Bartolomeo Passante, a student of Ribera and close to the mysterious figure of the "Master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds" (see entry Passante, Bartolomeo di Stefano Causa, in the Italian Biographical Dictionary - Volume 81, Rome, 2014) . The painting will warrant further study.
