78,5 x 78,5 in inch Original wooden frame;
Martinz's art is marked by the horrors of the Second World War, which he translated into art through critical realism and an unembellished depiction of conditions. The monumental Battle Scene of 1970 is a key work in Martinz's oeuvre; it captures a macabre reality. The artist's most important large formats were created at this time. A slaughterhouse is depicted, but the butcher seems to handle the animals in an uncontrolled and primitive manner, and they retain their horror-distorted features even after death. There is blood almost everywhere in the deliberate chaos that Fritz Martinz presents to us. The expressive work is a powerful manifesto of a well-developed style. Canvas slightly wavy in the corners. Offset stretcher lower right corner. Hardly noticeable and does not disturb the overall impression. Probably exhibited at the Secession.
