Beauitful / Large Late 19th C. Bhutanese Wool Shawl
Southeast Asia, Bhutan, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful and sizable shawl known as a hotah jaloh kira comprised of tightly-woven sheep or yak wool fibers in dyed hues of gold, cream, teal, salmon, burgundy, sapphire, grey, and crimson. The rectangular textile boasts 64 panels filled with cross-shaped 'tigma' motifs alternating between red and blue hues, with each section separated by chromatically-striated panels. Shawls like this were worn by high-ranking women in the winter to protect against the cold weather. Mounted on a thick fabric backing. Size (textile): 48.75" W x 66" H (123.8 cm x 167.6 cm); size (mount): 54.5" W x 72.5" H (138.4 cm x 184.2 cm).
