Beautiful Namji doll (1) - Wood - Cameroon
The Namji, an animist mountain people, are settled in northern Cameroon. They are renowned for their dolls, carved in wood and ornamented with beads in all sorts of colours, leather, bronze, cowry shells. . . These symbolise fecundity and are used by woman having trouble getting pregnant. The latter are carried on the back or worn around the neck, and in contact with the stomach, so that these can act.
